Trump promised to scrap climate laws if US oil bosses donated $1bn, according to The Guardian

The Guardian reported on May 9, 2024 that Trump promised to 20 executives at a Mar-a-Lago dinner that he would increase oil drilling and reverse pollution rules among other anti-environmental pitches, if they would raise $1 billion in donations for his presidential election campaign. He dangled what the Washington Post called a “remarkably blunt and transactional” offer, to tear up Joe Biden’s environmental regulations and prevent new ones, if he managed to get back into office. Of course, doing so would effectively quash the criminal cases pending against him.

With his own life dependent upon getting back into office, Trump is liable to promise whatever it takes to win the support of people who will profit from his policies and who don’t care about the climate. This is pure transactional politics anong billionaires and corporations, where the “who benefits” question is utterly divorced from the “who votes” cynical calculus.
